People had told me that Sichuanese love cards and mahjong so I put that to the test with a little survey of my own. The conclusion - Sichuanese love cards and mahjong (and xiangqi).

Amazing that you got in so close with these card/ mahjong games ! I had spotted a lot of them when in Beijing (the larger pavilions at the summer palace had lots of family groups w food and gambling) but was even more nervous than usual about approaching.

Su Sian - Sometimes (but rarely in Sichuan) people weren't in to it and I moved on. Other times I had to wait a bit until they forgot the camera was there. Sichuan people are crazy for cards and mahjong so it really didn't take long for them to get back to the game. I also think that Sichuan people are a little more 'chilled out'..you should go there next!
